Westonbirt Arboretum Walkway - ref 4137
CTS Bridges were acknowledged for supplying and fitting the Larch timber deck with Hi-Grip Excel non-slip inserts and Larch handrail to the steel walkway structure supplied by main contractor SH Structures.
At almost 300m long the walkway provides stunning views over the landscape and is the longest structure of its kind in the UK. The walkway rises from ground level to provide access without the need for stairs or lifts and then follows the topography of the land across a valley. The walkway widens at four points from 1.9m to 3.7m to provide spaces for pausing, reflection and interpretation of the surrounding woodland.
The judging panel commented 'Not only is this a striking composite structure of wood and steel in which wood is doing all the exciting bits; it is also an educational response in itself. It has the ability to inspire all generations to learn about wood.'
CTS supplied over 4km of Scottish larch decking boards that were individually tapered to suit the varying curve of the walkway and pre-drilled before inserting Hi-Grip Excel non-slip inserts. The 600m of Siberian larch handrail in varying width wedge shaped profile was also pre-made in the factory with segments cut to follow the curve of the structure. On site, CTS's own team of joiners installed the components and completed finishing works to a high standard.
The collaboration and co-operation between all parties involved ensured a very successful end to this bespoke and unique structure which has received overwhelmingly positive comments from visitors.
